Florence.

We didn’t know you could love a city so much until we came here. This being our first time and Europe, (and definitely not our last for quite some time) we started the trip off on a great foot.

We arrived in Florence, Italy by train from Rome mid-week and midday and immediately stepped off the train right into the heart of the Renaissance. After checking into our hotel for the duration of our stay there, we then took off to explore wherever our feet took us and whatever  our jet-lagged bodies could handle.

Our first day, (which was really only half a day) our group decided to take a wine tour in Sienna, so off they went, leaving the two of us along with my sister to wander the streets, taste the food, and shop the shops. It was our best day in Florence. Not sure if it was the unstructured timeline of our day or if it was solely because it was our first time in Italy, but we covered so much ground with time to spare all in one afternoon. We started off with walking one the main streets in Florence, Via dei Calzaioli, where shops line the streets and we found our first alley to get lost in. We then came across the Duomo and just the outside of the building itself makes you feel insignificant. As we kept walking, we walked through so many museums, one of our favorites being the Hall of the 500 in the Palazzo Vecchio. If you ever get the chance, go there and look up at the ceiling. the canvas paintings lined from wall to wall will not disappoint. We climbed to the top of the Palazzo Vecchio tower where amazing views overlooking the city awaited us. Seeing the Duomo from this perspective was incredible. If you look closely enough, you can see people at the very top of it. We sat at the top of the tower, admiring the views, taking it all in.

Realizing that it was time to meet back up with our group, we walked over to the Piazzale Michelangiolo, where EVERYONE goes to watch the sun set over the city. What. A. View. Local musicians played melodies as the sun went down over the Ponte Vecchio, making the experience unforgettable.

The next morning was tour day. Geoffrey and I got up early and slowly walked to a local cafe where we had cappuccino’s and pastries, which we were told was “the thing to do in Florence”. After breakfast, we met back up with the group and our tour guide and toured all the “must-see” locations, such as the Piazzale deli Uffizi, the inside of the Duomo, Piazza della Repubblica, and the Accademia where Michelangelo’s masterpiece “David” rests.

After our tour, we had a little bit of time to kill, so the remainder of our group ran swiftly back to the shops on the Ponte Vecchio and the street Via de’ Guicciardini, where rows of local leather shops awaited. I personally was in heaven. We’re huge fans of leather goods, so Geoffrey found an amazing leather bomber jacket and I snagged myself an adorable pair of locally crafted leather oxfords from a grumpy old man who took much pride in his work. He may have been grumpy though because it was time to close shop and I couldn’t decide on a pair of shoes. We then hurried back to grab our belongings at our hotel to catch the train back to Rome in time, only to be caught in a downpour. So, we, along with our friends, made the best of it, and ran through the streets in the pouring rain, clutching our recent purchases and laughing at how we must look to the locals watching us from the shelters. What a fun day.

So many wonderful things in just a couple of days time. We can’t wait to venture back here one day, and hopefully when it’s not 105 degrees out.

Next stop on our Europe takeover: Rome.
